Spotify Rise
1x Shortlist - Future Lions 2024
This project was completed in a course called Creative Brand Management alongside Kelly Peterson, Isabella Tyler, and Kate Landhuis. The work was entered into AKQA’s global student competition, Future Lions 2024, in partnership with Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity and the Wall Street Journal. This year’s client was Spotify and the brief asked students: “How can Spotify spread positivity by using technology to bring listeners closer to the creators and communities they love?” In addition, they encouraged participants to consider how Spotify might create new opportunities for advertisers, strengthen sustainability efforts, spread joy, and empower people from underrepresented communities, among others.
The Ask
The insight that sparked our idea was the fact that many people struggle to wake up in the morning and this can impact how they go about the rest of their day. Specifically, many people experience sleep inertia, that groggy feeling upon waking. Through our research, we found that certain sounds can help combat that grogginess. For example, waking up to melodic sounds that have lower frequencies could help wake you up in a more effective way. Spotify Rise is a personalized wakeup call that takes into account science, your personal taste, and the type of mood you want to wake up in so that you can start your day on a high note. My responsibilities included assisting with brainstorming ideas, researching, creating screen prototypes on Figma, script writing, and contributing to the art direction of the video.
